January Tarot Reading

So one thing I decided I want to do this year that I haven't done for a long time is more personal tarot readings. I used to write a monthly horoscope column for a local magazine, using tarot cards as my basis for each horoscope. Since I quit that, I haven't touched my rather extensive tarot collection and I'm pretty rusty. But I think it's probably like riding a bike, right?

At the start of every year, I used to do a wheel of the year spread - one card for each month. I'd note down each card's meaning and then consult back every month. I don't see tarot cards as a predictive tool, but more of a meditative guide - a way of focusing your thoughts. The point of consulting the card each month was to give me something to think about for that month, rather than to predict what was going to happen. I've decided to take up this tradition again, using my Tarot of a Moon Garden deck (my first deck).

So without further ado, here's January 2013's card:

The Seven of Pentacles represents hard work, growth, success, and progress. As an earth card, it tends to relate to money matters and calls for ingenuity and warns against impatience and imprudence. Well. I am supposed to be getting a promotion at work this month and we are saving with the aim of moving house in May/June when our current lease expires, so there are obvious connections here between the card and my current plans/state of being. And 2013 is a year I've committed to hard creative work and forging ahead in life, so this feels pretty apt.

I would certainly love to look back at the end of January and feel we achieved our goals money-wise and that I'd made progress with some personal/professional goals. I like that I drew this card for the start of a new year - it seems like there are some good messages to keep in mind.

  1. What a lovely thing to do. We do a comprehensive spread for the whole year, but I like the idea of one for the months ... and then checking back and see how it went.

  2. It's a good way for me to start refreshing my memory on all the cards too. It's been so long since I did any personal readings, I think one card at a time is all I can cope with!
