"Pain is inevitable, suffering is optional."
I'm getting seriously worried about the state of my hands, wrists and arms. I'm hoping it's just the cold weather, but I am plagued with aches, pains, twinges, cramps, numbness, and general crappy-body-crapping-out-on-me-ness (that's a thing). It used to just be my right arm that gave me trouble, but now my left arm is in on it too. I can't make a cupping motion with my left hand without getting cramps, and I can't hold much weight on my left shoulder without severe aches. My left wrist also feels "tight" for want of a better phrase, and I can't do much handwriting (I'm right-handed) or typing without my right wrist seizing up. Night-time is horrible - however I lie in bed, I end up hurting.
I've been working on Descent in short bursts to get the most out of my crappy arms - an hour max every morning before work and half an hour or less on my lunch break. My work load at my day job has increased to include more minute taking, which isn't helping. It's easier to type the minutes than hand-write them, so I use my netbook, but this means lugging that to work more often which is affecting my shoulders and neck. And that's annoying because it's a netbook - it weighs less than Fergus.* I shouldn't be having this problem carrying around a netbook.
I take anti-inflammatories when the pain gets too much, but at this time of year that means popping pills all the freaking time and I hate that. I can't imagine it's much good for me long-term. I think I need to visit the doctor, although I already know he'll recommend physiotherapy which seems pointless as I already know every possible exercise they could give me and none of them help.
Ugh. Anyway. We'll see. It is slowly getting warmer, so hopefully that will help. In the mean time, I need a minion to carry my stuff around for me. I can't pay you or anything.
*Everything weighs less than Fergus.

Would your stuff all fit in a backpack? Do you have one?
ReplyDeleteI don't, I use messenger bags to spare my right arm. I'm not sure a backpack would help in that respect - my right arm is *so bad at the moment, I can't really afford to do anything with it I don't have to.
DeleteThis sounds like something more than a GP can handle ... get her/him to refer you to a specialist ... and do a google search and see what your symptoms turn up as well
ReplyDeleteThat kind of pain really wears a gal down ... got a candle in the window for you.
Will do, if I can ever get a GP appointment! It's looking a lot like carpal tunnel, so I don't want to have to wait too long.
DeleteI can sort of relate to this. Recently, my left pinky has just gone NUMB. I can't feel a goddamn thing. It makes typing...interesting. And as a person who can normally type 84 wpm on a good day, it's worrisome. I guess 20+ years of guitar playing (I'm also right handed so my left hand got a workout all those years) and typing (especially now that I'm attempting to be a bullshit 'author') is starting to take its toll.
ReplyDeleteI've been to the doctor. I have to wear a brace at night =( They also told me to get bloodwork, which I'll make an appointment for this week. They tell me it could be a nerve anywhere between my neck and my wrist. First step is drugs. Second is a cortizone shot in the wrist. Third is surgery! Ick.
I hope we both don't have CT, Naomi! Let's hope it's just something goofy like a pinched nerve or some other shit. In any event, sorry to hear about your aches and pains.
Ouch! Hope you can some answers soon. It's good they're taking it seriously and sending you for further tests at least.
DeleteYeah, it blows =( Can't even play guitar if I wanted to...sigh....any updates on your ailment?
DeleteNothing yet - I haven't been able to get a GP appointment. But I switched to an ergonomic keyboard at work which has made a surprising amount of difference.
DeleteThat's good to hear! Hey, maybe it'll just go away...never hurts to think positively, right? ;)
